2011 Light-Up Frisbee Disc Review

We finally had another Light-Up Frisbee-Disc review! We put out flyers and had a turnout of around 40 people, which was more than we expected. Because there were so few of us and so many of them, we only had time to get the detailed reviews of 10 people (see below). Our reviewers' ages ranged from 14 to the mid-30s. Everyone had a great time and a lot of people said they'd like to come out and do it again. Next time we will bring more staff so we can review more people and hopefully get more teenagers to participate.

The table below shows some general info about the light-up discs, and following it are our notes and reviews of the testers.

comments These discs are bright, one of the easier of the discs for me to throw and catch, and fun to play with, but they seem visually plain. They are a lot like the Odyssey. Just like the other FlashFlight, but the lights change color. The LEDs morph from one color to another and it looks very cool. This disc (tied with the Photon) is the most visually impressive to me. A last comment about both Flashflight discs- although they were easy for me as a somewhat new thrower to throw straight and far, they do seem slightly heavy after throwing them a while. This disc feels hard, and it is difficult to catch. The LEDs turn off once the disc is motionless to save battery life, which might be ok for kids or for experienced, accurate throwers, but I found searching the lawn for the disc with its lights off frustrating. I like its LEDs though, and it was cool watching it get thrown by other people, so long as I didn't have to chase after it! The Photon's strobe LEDs create awesome tracers and hovering UFO-like effects. The Photon is not as bright from far away as some of the other discs, but I'd still say it looks the coolest out of the discs. It's light and compact, but a little hard to catch, probably due to its small diameter and possibly its wild visuals. The Photon is the easiest for me to throw straight. The Skylighter has the brightest LED of the bunch. Contrary to pretty much everybody else, I had a very hard time throwing the Skylighter straight. I could throw it a long way, but it always curved. I do like the outer, rubber rim, and I foung the Skylighter very easy to catch. The biggest difference between this disc and the Flashflight is that the Odyssey has 4 LEDs on the edges that look like bright spotlights on a UFO, whereas the FlashFlight has one LED in the middle that transmits light to the edges and gives it a sort of a glow more than bright points of light. The Odyssey colors look deeper in tone, and the lights can be set to blink or steady.

comments This is a very standard, frisbee-type disc with lighting. I like the pushbutton switch better than the twist switch of the older FlashFlights, and the LEDs seem to be brighter than on the older Flashflights. There was only one other group of people at the park with a light-up frisbee, and they had a FlashFlight, FYI. The Disc-O seems to have had some major improvement since I last tested one. The one we tested in '05 was dim and hard to see, but the latest version is just as bright as the standard FlashFlight. This one has 4 lights on the edges. They are bright if the frisbee is flying straight to or away from you, but they disappear when the disc is flying over your head. The lights also turn themselves off if the disc sits motionless for just a few seconds. That may extend battery life, but it also makes it hard to find in the grass at night. This is an oddball disc. It's easy to throw it far, but not so easy to catch. It's hard to catch because it flies very fast, but the strobe effect makes it look like it's moving slower than it really is. It is also FOR USE ON GRASS ONLY. The plastic is sort of brittle and will break if it crashes into pavement. The strobe definitely looks awesome, and it gets a lot of attention from bystanders. I recommend the Photon for more athletic players who want to get attention from bystanders. The Skylighter is another oddball because it's shaped different than a classic frisbee. It has a ridge around the top edge that makes it easier to throw. It also flies slower than the rest, which makes it easier to catch. The white lights are in the center of the disc, and they shine brightly through the transparent material. You can see them from a mile away, and they will bend like a taco shell without breaking. This is very similar to the FlashFlight, except that it has 4 big lights instead of 9 little lights. Unlike the AstroDisc, the Odyssey's 4 lights are easy to see from any angle. The Odyssey is also made with color-changing lights (Odyssey Ravolution) like the Disc-O, but we have none in stock to test.

Comments Cool disc, but it hurts a little bit when I catch it. This is my favorite disc so far as looks. I like the color-changing lights! It's okay except for the lights turning themselves off. That's weird how the lights look when it's flying. Really bright, very fun! Pretty much like the FlashFlight, but looks a little different in the air.

Comments Pretty much just like a regular frisbee, but with lights. No complaints. The color-changing lights are cool. The lights turn off a few seconds after it hits the ground, so it's hard to find in the dark. This disc is smaller than the rest and it flies faster, so you can throw it a long way! The strobe lights look awesome! I love this one! It's the brightest and by far the easiest to catch! Too bad it doesn't have strobe lights or lights that change color. No complaints. Easy to throw and catch, easy to see.

Comments Very bright. It's cool. This is just like the other FlashFlight, but the lights change color. This one would be better if the lights didn't turn off. This one looks weird when it's flying, but it's hard to catch. Easy to throw, easy to catch, can see it from a mile away. Flies great, but needs more lights.

Comments Not much to say about it. It's like a frisbee with lights on it. It's cool. Cool lights. Prob'ly sell better in Austin or San Fran. Annoying that the lights turn off if you let it sit for a minute. Really cool! I love the strobe thing! The plastic seems brittle, though. Do they make golf discs? Fun to play with. Easy to throw straight. It can coast along at slower speeds than the other discs. Very flexible and no fiber optics to get damaged. This is a lot like the FlashFlight – just like a plain frisbee with lights.

Comments Hurts when I catch it. I like the color-changing lights. Spent more time looking for the disc in the dark than playing with it. Looks awesome! Flies very fast, hard to catch. This one is different than all the others. It is the easiest to throw and to catch, and it is the brightest. No comments. Cool disc.

Comments Hurts when I catch it. The lights are very cool. Hurts when I catch it, though. No comment. Looks cool. Maybe more fun to throw than to catch. Very easy to catch, doesn't sting. Very bright lights. Cool disc. Maybe better with more lights.

Comments I like the green one. The color-changing lights are cool. Cool name. The lights' color doesn't match the disc color. Looks really weird when it's flying! I can almost throw this one straight, and it's the only one that doesn't sting when I catch it. This one is cool. Very similar to the Astro Disc and the FlashFlight.

comments This one flies the best for me. I like it! Old school frisbee shape like I'm used to! Eh... Not so sure about the color-changing lights... Very plain frisbee-type disc with lights. Not sure if it's a good idea for the lights to turn off automatically. Very cool! Flies more like a golf disc than a frisbee. This one throws different than all the rest and seems lighter. For me, it curves like crazy - I think because it's so light. The white light in the middle is very cool, and it's very easy to catch. I like this one, too. It flies very well for me and is very bright.

Comments The FlashFlight are probably the most commonly seen light-up LED discs on the market. They're shaped like a regular Wham-O Frisbee, but with 9 fiber-optic lights radiating from a central push-button switch. The current models seem to be brighter than the older ones with the knob switch. The fiber optics design kind of gives the FlashFlight an overall glow instead of bright dots. Disc-O's are the same as the regular FlashFlight discs, but the color of the light morphs every few seconds. The current Disc-O's are much brighter than the older Disc-O's. Almost everybody at the event liked the color-changing lights. The Astro disc is also commonly seen in sporting goods stores. The discs come in various colors, but the 4 lights on the edge don't necessarily match the color of the disc. I think a lot of people in the review got annoyed with the Astro disc's automatic shut-off and took out their frustrations on the Brightness rating. The Photon has 2 strobe speeds that basically make it look like it is barely rotating as it flies. They look great, but they fly fast and are harder to catch than other frisbee-style discs. They are also out of production, so you'd better get one now or forever hold your peace. The Skylighter is unique in 3 ways: It has lights mounted in the center without fiber optics, it has a knurled upper edge, and it has a rubberized edge. They are identical to the Aerobie Superdisc Ultra, but with an LED light. The BlackJax Sports Odyssey is the successor of the very popular Orby Mothership and is the most recent addition to the light-up frisbee-type disc market. It has 4 very bright LEDs mounted on the edge that could be used to signal airplanes and is made by the same company as used to make the Orby Mothership. BlackJax Sports also produces the only light-up golf discs on the market as of this writing (6/2011).
